Wall Street data, right inside Google Sheets.
People were copying thousands of numbers into spreadsheets by hand or running scrapers that broke every week. We built a Google Sheets add-on that pulls the data in with a formula, then figured out the hard parts of running it as a business: global sales tax, a YouTube-to-customer funnel, and support that doesn't drown us.

How it went
- The problemCopy-pasting data by hand, or fragile scrapers that break and get blocked
- The productA Google Sheets add-on that pulls market data with a formula
- PaymentsStarted on Stripe, moved to a merchant of record so global tax is handled
- GrowthOrganic YouTube audience tracked all the way to paying customers
- SupportA help hub, plus AI-drafted replies for the common questions
The problem
If you manage your own investments in a spreadsheet, you know the routine. Look up a number, copy it, paste it, repeat a few thousand times. It’s slow and boring, and one bad paste throws everything off.
Before AI, the only other option was a web scraper. Scrapers are fragile. Websites change their layout and the scraper breaks. Sites notice and block you. You end up maintaining the scraper more than you use the data.
What we built
Tickerdata is a Google Sheets add-on. You type a formula and the data shows up: prices, fundamentals, history. The goal was simple: give a regular person the kind of information a broker gets from a Bloomberg terminal, in a few clicks, in the spreadsheet they already use.
Getting paid, everywhere
Building the product was half the job. Taking money for it turned out to be its own project.
We started on Stripe. Then we learned how digital sales tax works now: dozens of countries, plus US states, each wanting you to register, collect, file and pay. For a small team that’s impossible to keep up with.
So we moved to a merchant of record (first Lemon Squeezy, now looking at Stripe Managed Payments). They become the seller on paper and handle the tax everywhere. We tested a few setups to keep fees per sale as low as we could.
Growing without a big ad budget
Most of our customers come from organic YouTube videos and the audiences around them. We built tracking that follows someone from the video they watched to the moment they subscribe, using PostHog to see what people actually use. That tells us which videos bring customers and which features to build next.
Support that scales
A few people can’t answer every email by hand. So we:
- Built a help hub and docs portal that answers the common questions before anyone writes in
- Set up AI-drafted replies for the questions we get over and over, so people get an answer fast and we still talk to them ourselves
- Connected our email and communication channels so nothing falls through the cracks
Replies got faster, and people are happier with the product because of it.
We’ve also worked out partnerships with data providers and other companies that help us grow further than we could alone.
What a local business can take from this
- You probably don't need to be a tax expert. Find a tool that carries that load for you.
- Answer each common question once, well. A simple help page or FAQ saves hours a week.
- AI is great for first drafts. It handles the routine replies so you have time for the ones that need you.
- Measure what people do, not what you guess. Even a small business can see which ads and posts actually bring customers in.
